Special note to Airline Pilots

Nick is glad to work with Pilots

by phone or face to face

For eight years now, I have worked in close association with the excellent Professor Dr Peter Orton, FRCGP, who is widely respected as one of the world’s leading AeroMedical Examiners. (Peter’s private medical clinic is called ‘Aviation Medica’, and is based at Stansted Airport in the UK).

Together, we care for the all-round well-being of Airline Pilots from all over the world, (from the most Senior Captains through to the newest First Officers), as well as other individuals in highly demanding occupations.

Please rest assured that your inquiry to me, and our working together, will be treated with the strictest confidentiality and discretion.

I can personally help should you be suffering…

  • an excessive sense of stress, or have anxiety or panic attacks
  • low mood, or exhaustion, or a loss of zest-for-life
  • psychologically troubling or even traumatic experiences in your personal or professional life, (recent or long ago), that can be the source of trapped emotional-upset causing mind & body symptoms
  • apprehension about forthcoming SIM tests or Command Exams or other high-intensity scenarios requiring your peak performance.

As a psychologist & psychotherapist, I have developed a range of effective approaches for men & women involved in high-intensity, highly challenging work … not the least of which is being an Airline Pilot.

I warmly invite you to email me

Simply email me to outline in brief what’s been troubling you, and invite me to contact you, by phone or email, so that we can reassure ourselves I should be able to help. There’s no charge for this exploratory chat. You might then decide to book an appointment.

How you and I would work together

We can work together face to face in my home, here in central Cambridge just half an hour’s drive up the M11 from Dr Peter Orton’s Aviation Medica clinic at Stansted Airport; or, by special arrangement, we can meet there in Dr Orton’s clinic. For a face to face session, my fee is £300 for 2½hrs. (Three hundred pounds sterling for 2.5hrs.)

Alternatively, I offer a phonecall service which proves very useful if face to face sessions are not feasible, or when you are suffering an attack of symptoms. My phonecall fee is £200 for 75 minutes. (Two hundred pounds sterling for seventy- five minutes.)

Occasional calls ‘to strike while the iron’s hot’
Once we’re working together, it can prove very useful for you to phone me exactly when the problem raises its head (…the anxiety, the unhelpful thoughts, the physical symptoms). At that time, a 15 minute conversation is usually enough to work through that particularly difficult moment. These ‘ad hoc’ calls are charged at a fee of £3 per minute (which is simply added to your bill for our regular phonecall or face to face session).

Included in the above prices
… is my brief follow-up ‘aide-memoire’ email that I send you, to summarise the key themes of our formal phonecall or face-to-face session.

How many sessions and how often?

Though it’s very likely that even our initial session working together will bring you considerable relief and encouragement, it is equally likely that putting things right, will be a process requiring determination.
For you to benefit from ‘the power of momentum’ in your improvements, and to achieve a satisfying and enduring level of good emotional health…

we would need 6 phonecalls, at a rate of one per week or
3 face to face sessions - at a rate of one every two weeks

or some mixture of those two approaches.

That number of sessions reflects the process of returning to good health:

a) you and I need to evaluate the full impact of the problem and its cause/its roots
b) to explore a range of remedial actions for you to take (in effect, your ‘homework’)
c) to evaluate what have been the most helpful approaches from that initial range of remedies, and to agree what activities you will need to practice to maintain and build upon the gains you’ve made.

The road to recovery is NOT at all like a once-only visit to your General Practitioner to receive an off-the-shelf lotion or potion; nor is it like lying back in the chair to let the Dentist fix your teeth. For your emotional health to get properly and lastingly better, you need to learn very particular skills that you then apply with determination in your everyday life.
In other words, it’s much more akin to when you went from being a novice, to your first solo flight in a glider, Cessner or Piper.
You didn’t take a pill, and no one flew it for you.
This ‘skills not pills’ approach has a great track-record in creating good emotional-health that goes from strength to strength, but it’s no miracle cure. The steep learning curve requires a process of close collaboration between you and I.

If you need a formal evaluation letter
Once we’re working together, I can if required provide a one-page letter, perhaps for your Aeromedical Examiner, or for your employing organisation. If you and I have already shared my recommended 6 phonecalls or 3 face to face sessions, or their equivalent, that formal letter is complementary. In all other circumstances, the fee for that letter will be £100.

Means of Payment for all of the above:
At the beginning of our meeting or call, I invite you to pay by cash, credit or debit card.
I am happy to email you a formal receipt for the cost of this ‘Well-Being Skills Coaching’.

Please contact me to discuss your interest.
You might find the rest of the ‘One to One with Nick’ page of interest, as it further explains the sorts of goals we could work on together.

And please consider forwarding this invitation to any dear friend who might be interested in the sort of help I offer.

The help I’m glad to offer every individual

Every life inevitably has its tricky times, and it’s my job to offer practical guidance on what actions can dramatically and lastingly improve an individual’s all-round well-being. I’d be glad to help you with…

a) resolving your most troubling emotions, and unhelpful thoughts and behaviours (no matter how longstanding).

b) skillfully handling life’s high-pressure situations, by learning what I call HotIron-KnowHow : how to ace the exam or the interview or the high-pressure spotlight performance when you want to give your best.

c) swiftly learning or improving skills of every sort, for your personal and professional life (from feeling at ease when public speaking, through to enriching your most treasured relationships).

d) thinking through a key life-decision (which might be choosing a home, a school, a career move, or evaluating a new opportunity).

e) considering how to help a loved-one who might need some of the above.

The mind & body problems common to us all

Do please get in touch if you’re suffering emotional upset, troubling thoughts, stress at work, or you’d like to rid yourself of some unhelpful habit or behaviour, or some physical ailment that you suspect has emotional causes (perhaps affecting your digestion, weight, skin, migraines, speech, vision or libido).
Your symptom could be anxiety-attacks, low or irritable mood, poor sleep, addictive behaviours, upsetting relationships, or intrusive thoughts of long-ago incidents. Just as common, is a persistent sense of guilt, painful regret, a debilitating phobia, or the ache of unfulfilled daydreams and a loss of passion-for-life.
We humans are creatures of habit, and prone to repeat the patterns & behaviours from our past…no matter how unhelpful they are to us … until we do something decisive to remedy our unwanted reactions.
The problems only go away if they are boldly confronted. Otherwise, if we try to ignore them or bury them, they are apt to fester and infect other parts of one’s life, and occasionally wreak havoc.
Sharing such personal troubles with a professional therapist, might be first time around for you… and hard for you to talk about. On the other hand, helping solve such problems is how I make my living these past twenty years. I have seen time and again that the most personal, secret & painful upsets, actually exist in one form or another in every single life, without exception. Such troubles are part & parcel of living, and all we can do is get better at resolving them… and moving on creatively.
The good news is… it doesn’t matter whether it’s a relatively recent or a life-long problem that you’re experiencing, therapeutic strategies have emerged these past few years, that can treat the causes swiftly & effectively, helping you to transform your relationship with even long-standing upsets.
It’s not just YOU who’ll benefit by taking action. It’s all those closest to you, because you’ll be a far happier person to be around… far more able to share.

The hidden cost of emotional upset

‘Trapped emotional pain’ can cost you dearly: the days off work feeling under the weather, and generally under-performing. You also waste money trying to numb…postpone… the emotional pain by excessively eating, drinking and buying. Worst of all, emotional wounds and worries can take a toll on your personal and most important relationships, putting these in jeopardy.

How you and I could work together on the phone

I appreciate it can be time-consuming or all but impossible to make the journey to my home in leafy Cambridge for a face-to-face discussion in front of my log fire. Which is why I’m glad to work together over the phone, i.e. you’d phone me at a time agreed between us, either on my Cambridge landline, or my mobile, whichever suits you. It’s been my experience that a 75 minute phone session is a good start, and that’s my standard. If you wish, and your budget allows, we can usually extend the 75 minutes. Another major advantage of our working over the phone, is that we can ‘strike while the iron’s hot’: because the very best time to treat one’s emotional & psychological problems, is in the moment when they’re most troubling you. It’s in that very moment (of the grief, anxiety, or addictive craving), that the psychotherapy technique is most powerful. So once you and I are working together, if you find yourself hijacked by the problem, you can call there and then so we can instantly counter-attack with an in-the-moment ‘antidote activity’ which should severely weaken the problem’s roots.

It’s a close collaboration

The road to recovery from long-standing problems, is not at all like a once-only visit to your General Practitioner to receive an off-the-shelf lotion or potion; nor is it like lying back in the chair to let the Dentist fix your teeth. For your emotional health to get properly and lastingly better, you need to learn very particular skills that you then apply with determination in your everyday life. This ‘skills not pills’ approach has a great track-record in creating good emotional-health that goes from strength to strength, but it’s no miracle cure. The steep learning curve requires a process of close collaboration between you and I.

What approaches do I use?

Rather than only talking things through, I will apply…and will train you in…some very particular well-being principles, and remedial techniques ranging from EMDR, Clinical Hypnosis, CBT, and other very practical approaches widely agreed upon by the world’s best respected therapeutic practitioners and researchers. After our formal session, I will send you a brief email (perhaps 150 words) reminding you of our key themes discussed, and the course of action we agreed.

My phone fee

I charge £200 for all or any part of my standard 75-minute phonecall discussion. (Two hundred pounds sterling, or its foreign currency equivalent, for seventy-five minutes.) This fee is payable by paypal, credit or debit card, at the beginning of our call.

How many sessions and how often?
Even our first call together might prove reassuringly helpful to you, but to turn the problem around once and for all, it has been my experience that you will gain most from about six such 75-minute calls spread over six consecutive weeks so as to maintain the momentum of your improvement. (Or, if your circumstances permit, I suggest we have three face-to-face sessions together, and these are explained below.) Getting really well, will also require you to tenaciously practice the tailor-made homework tasks that you and I agree need doing between sessions, so you can explore exactly what new self-help techniques work best for you.

Cost of Occasional Calls to ‘strike while the iron’s hot’

Once we’re working together, those really valuable ‘strike while the iron’s hot’ calls to me that I mention above, are charged at £3 per minute (three pounds sterling). Such a ‘capturing-the-moment-call’ might need just 10 minutes to help guide you through a tricky incident when the problem has pounced.

Alternatively, you and I can work face-to-face

You can arrange to work with me at my home in Cambridge (post code CB3 9LY; my home is 2 minutes from junction 12 or the M11; half an hour north of Stansted Airport); and we can work together in front of my log fire. Sessions are 2.5 hours long, giving us ample time to explore the problem and agree promising ways forward. If you are travelling from afar, we can agree to extend this meeting time.

My ‘face to face’ fee is £300 for 2½hrs (Three hundred pounds sterling for 2.5hrs time together, which you can pay using paypal, or your debit or credit card, at the beginning of our meeting.)

Formal Receipt
I am happy to email you a formal receipt for the cost of this ‘Well-Being Skills Coaching’ by phone or face-to-face.

To conclude

If the above makes sense to you and seems promising, simply email me to say in brief what’s been troubling you, and invite me to contact you by phone or email so that we can reassure ourselves I should be able to help.
You can rest assured I shall treat your inquiry with the strictest confidentiality and discretion.
